One of the top culinary competitions on the calendar is the Unilever Foodsolutions By Invitation Only (BIO) event that has taken place annually for the past five years. During this event, six of the country's leading chefs are invited to compete in a winner-takes-all competition, with R40 000 up for grabs.

The BIO provides an exclusive forum for top chefs to compete against each other. This year's chefs invited to the mystery basket cook-off at Hostex Cape in March include: Michelle Barry (principal of Christina Martin School of Food and Wine in Durban); Dilene Boyd (nee Cranna, an independent pastry chef from Johannesburg); Rudi Liebenberg (executive chef at Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town); Mike Bassett (chef patron of Ginja and Myoga restaurants in Cape Town); Paul Gindra (executive chef of Radisson Blu Hotel in Sandton); and Nicholas Froneman (executive chef at Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban).

The chefs were chosen for their contribution to the food industry, enduring reputations, unwavering commitment to quality and standards of excellence and their outstanding culinary talent and skill.

The six chefs will compete on the MAC Brothers stand at Hostex Cape at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 10 March 2010.

Past winners of the BIO competition include Jodi-Ann Pearton (2009); George Jardine (2008); Reuben Riffel (2007); and Gerard van Staden (2005).
