Michael Kewley has been appointed GM of The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa in Morningside, Johannesburg. He takes over from Annabel Stanbury, who served as GM for four years, as she relocates to Spain.

Kewley has worked previously at the the Hilton Durban hotel, Beverley Hills Hotel in Umhlanga, the Saxon and most recently the Palazzo hotel in Johannesburg. He is also a member of the Chane des Rtisseurs.

The Fairlawns is a five-star hotel that attracts local and international guests. It currently has 18 suites and a presidential residence, Bali-styled spa, enlarged and revamped gourmet restaurant and professional conference and special events facilities. Additional accommodation is being added to the hotel, which will bring to 40 the number of suites available. The new suites will begin their dry run from 1 May 2010 and be ready for the World Cup.

Kewley says, "My vision for this property is attention to detail. A small hotel, like a boutique hotel, is known as a 'home away from home'. This hotel truly has that feeling. Small, personalised bits and pieces can happen in this environment, as opposed to the bigger hotels."

The hotel has strong weekly corporate business and is looking to grow the leisure weekend business, which at this stage is mainly romantic packages and gourmet weekends.

"This is a little oasis in the middle of Sandton that is a one stop shop. The joy of this hotel is the experience can be differently every time you come, with every suite decorated differently," says Kewley.

A stronger focus on the environmental impact of the hotel is now in place, across the new and old sections of the property. Kewley headed up the "green team" at a previous hotel and is keen to adopt these principles and policies to The Fairlawns.
